Dedicated Academy gymnast Rebecca Tunney attends UK School Games

On the weekend of 4th - 5th September 2010 the Academy's Rebecca Tunney attended the UK School Games in Gateshead, a multi-sport event for the UK's elite young athletes of school age. She was supported by her mother and grandparents who came up from Wales for the weekend.

Representatives from England/Wales/Scotland/Northern Ireland took part in the games. The event started off with an opening ceremony where everyone marched onto the track in Olympic style in their teams, some of the gymnasts did forward rolls onto the track. It was a great atmosphere and a fantastic start to the games.

Rebecca was one of just six young people picked to be part of the English Gymnastics squad.

On the Saturday Rebecca took part in the discipline rounds and the top two from each group went through to the finals. Rebecca’s team where the overall winners and received a gold medal. Rebecca was also the individual overall winner and received a further gold medal.

On the Sunday Rebecca took part in the finals for the bars and vault disciplines, she came second in the bars and received a silver medal and fourth place in the vault discipline.

Rebecca is extremely dedicated to gymnastics; she travels to Liverpool to trains for 30 hours a week over five days and manages to keep up with her school work.

Well done Rebecca!
