Eco-Schools

Eco-Garden

In April 2010, plans were accepted and funding granted to create an eco-garden at the Academy.

Plans were submitted to make three separate areas which will enhance the Academy environment in a number of ways:

  • creating an inspirational and alternative learning area in order to carry out the Academy motto 'inspiring minds'
  • to provide a safe outdoor area for students who do not want to be involved in football and other sports
  • to enthuse other students about the environment whilst encouraging them to keep the Academy tidy by inputting some younger personality into the space
  • and finally to ensure that none of the current species are undisturbed and others are encouraged to the area.

These plans will eventually be documented and put in a portfolio leading to the achievement of the Green Flag award from the Eco-Schools organisation. If successful funding which could be used to start up a new student garden in the new build when it is complete.

Recycling

The garden project whilst being a major focus for us at the moment is not our sole objective. We have written to the Tameside Council to recommence recycling collections from this site initially until there is another person on the Manor Road site who could commit to overseeing the collection. Plans to see increase our recycling to include plastic bottles and waste food are also in the pipeline which Miss Hutchinson and the eco-tem are prepared to oversee.

Further plans

Encouraging students and teachers to think about our environment and conserve energy, we have already created a number of posters and signs to place around the school to remind people to turn lights and projectors off after their use. Furthermore we hope to introduce more bins so that all areas of the Academy are kept clean, to add to that we would like to suggest the use of a detention for any student found chewing gum, littering or smoking.

Get involved

If you would like to learn more about what the Academy is doing to help the environment or maybe you want to get involved and help the Eco-Team achieve 'Eco-School Green Award' status then you can do so by contacting Ms Hutchinson.
