The beginning of November 2010 saw the first meeting of Film Club at Cryer Street. There was a fantastic turn out of students all of whom were incredibly enthusiastic at being part of this new extra curricular activity.
We started by activating the membership on the website and navigating our way around it. We discovered that we can request films that we would like to see so that the teachers can order them, and we were shown how to write a review of the films that we see online.
The company, The FilmClub.org, runs a weekly competition for the review of the week from which the reviewer chosen enters a prize draw. Winners of this have received fantastic prizes such as the chance to go to a film premier in London all expenses paid and meet the cast of the film! There is also the opportunity to get professionals from the film industry to come into school and talk to the film club members, people that work in hair and make up, prosthetics, costume, directors, musical direction and actors. Furthermore there is a grant that we have access to improve our film club, so we will be looking to our members for inspiration on how to make some improvements to our film club – So get your thinking caps on!
Film Club is a government funded initiative which works with Lovefilm.com, we are sent 3 DVD’s to watch at a time chosen from a list on the website. We are allowed 6 DVD’s per month to watch, the members then review at least 2 films per term online. As an extra incentive Miss Chapman will choose an Academy reviewer who will win a film related prize.
The Film club provides an excellent opportunity to watch films that you may never have seen, find that you have more in common with others you may never have spoken to before, have fun, and finally improve the skills that you have learned in class.
If you are interested in joining in, we meet in C38 every Thursday at the endof the Academy Day.
