FilmClub Review - Hocus Pocus

Hocus Pocus is a film all about 3 quirky and mischievous Witches called Winnie, Sarah and Mary who are all sisters and were hanged for stealing children’s lives.

In the film a young boy called Thakory Binxs wakes up to find his sister missing - he races outside and hears a song filling the air which is trying to lure children away from their homes and to the witches. His sister Emily is in a hypnotic trance walking blindly into the wood. He races after her to try and save her from the horrific fate the withes have in mind.

He arrives at their house as Emily is invited in. Thakory sneaks over to the window and peers in; he tries desperately not to be seen or heard. He sees the witches adding ingredients to a bubbling cauldron as they lift the huge spoon out of the cauldron and place it to Emily’s mouth. Thakory climbs through the widow and lands on a wide shelf hanging from the wall. As they put the potion filled spoon to her mouth he jumps down from the shelf. The witches are distracted and they therefore try and stop the boy rather than steal the girl’s life. Thakory tips the cauldron over spilling all its contents and as the witches gaze over at Emily, they see that she has consumed the potion.

What follows is almost two hours of near scrapes and nail-biting family action as 300 years later a boy called Max goes to the house of the three withes in a bid to win a young girl’s heart. Inside they read a warning about lighting a candle, of course he cannot resist resulting in the magic returning the witches, bringing them back from the dead. Once again they wreak havoc upon the town so it is now up to Thakory Binx, the cat, Max, his little sister Dani and Max’s friend Alison to stop the witches and save the town’s children.

The costumes for the three witches I particularly liked, because of the colours and the imaginative design Winnie for example has a green costume with touches of purple I think that Winnie looks great in these colours and even though it is a dark green and they use dark colours I think it makes her stand out and makes her look a little mysterious. The colours Sarah wears on her costume are pink, red and a bit of light purple unlike Winnie’s, which is a very dark purple. These colours also compliment Sarah with her funny loves to play attitude. Mary wears brown and dark red colours these show how different she is to the group and how she too is slightly mysterious but enjoys having fun.

My comments on this film is that it is a must see Disney classic and a fun way to celebrate Halloween. Myself? I’m not a big fan of scary films or anything to do with horror but this film was ideal for me as it is one for all ages and has a bit of everything really. With a dash of fantasy magic it is just an amazing film and I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone.

They are all terrific actors and you can tell in their performance that they’re all very serious and concentrate hard on the lines when acting. I would not change anything about it and think that if there were more films like this then children would be a lot happier on Saturdays and Sundays!
