LRC News: Students compete in 2010 Spelling Bee!

Students this week competed in the 2010 Spelling Bee competition organised by national daily newspaper The Times. The students finished with a healthy 38-points. Eventual winner from Poynton High School ran away with the “Local Heat Winners" title with a magnificent 64-points!

The points awarded were: 8th Place - 21 points. 7th Place - 30 Points. 6th place - 38 Points. 5th Place - 39 Points. 4th Place - 41 Points. 3rd Place - 41 Points. 2nd Place- 43 Points. 1st Place - 64 Points

After the first round we were in joint 3rd place! This was helped by a gallant effort from Joe Ainsworth, left solely to fend 3 female contestants off and unfortunately fell at the spell "Gymkhana" hurdle! During the second round, tactical thinking lead the team to decide on the medium spell, 2 point for each spelling, and a team member change with our reserve player. Poynton's heavy lead in the first round, gave them head way to choose easy spell in the second round.

After the blood, sweat and tears a fantastic time was had by all. Reflecting on the experience, the laughs and the Burger King at the end of it all, kept spirits flying high! 2010 Spelling Bees are looking forward to next year……. as supporters!
