Last half term students submitted suggestions of what the house name should be. The most popular name voted for was MANDELA chosen after the Nobel peace prize winner Nelson Mandela. One lucky student was randomly selected to receive a special treat for their contribution and that student was Karishma Dayalji from tutorial group A8.
Nelson Mandela received the Nobel peace prize for helping to lead the transition towards multi-racial democracy in South Africa. Nelson Mandela represents an inspirational icon of freedom in Africa and around the world, an inspiring symbol of tolerance and humanity. This ethos of “ubuntu” is a way of life that underpins the concept of an open society.
In Mandela House we are trying to promote this level of mutual respect to encourage students to achieve well in the Academy.

National flower
The giant or king protea (Protea cynaroides) is widely distributed in the south-western and southern areas of the Western Cape, from the Cedarberg up to just east of Grahamstown. South Africa's national flower is the largest of the proteas, which make up an important part of the Cape Floral Region, a major global biodiversity hotspot and a Unesco World Heritage site. The proteas also give their name to South Africa's national cricket team.
