On the 9th October a team of highly talented year 11 students hosted a competition for young Mathematicians from local Primary Schools. The year 11 students, who are working towards a qualification in Maths Leadership split the competition into three exciting rounds designed to help the Year 6 students with their numeracy skills. The first round was a carousel of activities including creating structures from paper, practical investigations using water and puzzles using chess boards. The students really enjoyed the fast pace of these activities and using their problem solving skills. Students’ mathematical knowledge was really put to the test in the next round by means of a quiz where teams were pitted against each other in a battle of brain power in order to answer questions and riddles. The competition culminated in a high octane, nail-biting maths relay race. This final battle combined teamwork, knowledge, logical thinking and fast running!
Three primary schools were represented at the competition and were a credit to themselves and their teachers. The schools were Greenside Lane, Moorside and Manchester Road. It was an extremely close competition with each of the schools having a team in the top three. Congratulations go to the overall winners, Manchester Road who received medals for their achievement.
Congratulations also go to the year 11 team who organised the extremely successful event. The team consisted of Ikra Ali, Muhammed Ali, Abhishek Bhaktar, Daniel Bayes, Laine Callaghan, Amy Kerr and Holleeann Walker. This group of professional young adults should be proud of their great achievement.
