Previous Productions:

Billy Elliot - December 2016

‘‘To say that this week’s production of Billy Elliot was stunning is perhaps an understatement. After 20 years of working in different schools across the North West, and many, many years of watching school productions in numerous schools (some renowned for their delivery of Expressive Arts), once again we were blown away by the sheer professionalism, talent and hard work that was on display.  As the Mayor of Tameside said on Tuesday evening, “that performance was something you would pay lots of money to see in a professional Theatre.”

The students were truly breath-taking in their roles, the lead students oozed confidence and they delivered their lines with passion and heart felt emotion. The support from the staff was exceptional, from front of house to refreshments, programme and marketing and technical expertise.
As staff will know, I recently visited four of the very best schools in the country. What I saw this week was undoubtedly something of which these schools would be envious.’

Singin' in the Rain - December 2015

“Many thanks to you for inviting us to the Show tonight. We thoroughly enjoyed what was a most professional and entertaining production. Please pass on our thanks and congratulations to the cast, orchestra, backroom staff, teachers and everyone else associated with the fabulous Show. Well done to all.” Great learning through politeness, honesty and hard work “Thank you all for a wonderful evening at last night’s performance of Singing in the Rain, it was brilliant and we really enjoyed it.  All the cast should be really proud of themselves as you could tell how committed and full of enthusiasm they were. Well done to everyone at the Academy.”

“I am emailing to tell you how much I enjoyed your school production last night. Your staff and students worked really hard, you have some extremely talented singers. I applaud the young man (one of the leading roles) who just jumped, smiled and carried on singing after he slipped (such a pro!). Molly as always has a voice of an angel. It was also lovely to see more male dancers, the tap dancing was a joy to watch, I wanted to get on stage and join in. Well done to all involved, your hard work paid off, the show was FANTASTIC.”

Evita - December 2014

Undertaking the 3rd Academy production, Evita showcased students’ ability to take on meaningful and serious themes in a musical. Over 60 students were part of the cast and crew and once again, produced a professional performance across three sell out performances. The cast and crew had the wonderful opportunity of working again with professional musicians who made up the band.  The performance was well received by audiences who applauded students on their excellent portrayal of the historical and political backdrop of the show.

Les Miserables - December 2013

The Academy Production of Les Miserables took place during the 1st week of December. The Academy production showcased the hard work and dedication of the students and staff of the Performing Arts Department. The musical was wonderfully received by the sold out audience of family, friends and local members of the community.

"Undertaking the famous musical phenomenon that is Les Miserables, presented us with a huge challenge.  Staff and students have been working tirelessly since May to produce all aspects of the show.  We are delighted with the end result.  The students have excelled themselves in all aspects of their performance and the talent we have at Droylsden Academy is incredible.  We are proud to teach and know each and every one of them.  We would like to thank parents and carers for their continued support throughout the process, members of the community for their support, and New Charter Housing for their contributions to our raffle prizes." Hairspray - February 2013

Droylsden Academy’s first ever musical production was showcased this week in a sell-out 3 night performance which stunned and wowed audiences.

Hairspray was chosen for its moral, social and political themes and to highlight to students the importance of integration, individuality and independence.  Presented with a very strong core of students, staff felt that Hairspray would be an excellent platform for their talents.

As the first Academy production, Hairspray is a fun, action-packed show for all ages.  Over 150 students auditioned for the show in September and with a strong field, the final cast of 60 were chosen, including students from all year groups.  Prior to the show, the cast visited the Lowry to watch the production which inspired and excited them ready for their own show.

The Performing Arts team are extremely proud of every student who was involved both on and off stage.  They were a credit to themselves and the Academy displaying professionalism, dedication and talent.  We look forward to the next production which will be staged later this year.

Interim Principal Mr Eric Jackson said “Hairspray represented all that is good about this Academy.  The production was a brilliant team effort, so professional, so well-rehearsed and the culmination of excellent planning.  I was overwhelmed by the student’s performances.”
