Random Radio - Academy's online radio station

Key2Radio is an exciting new project for 2010 that has been created with the aim to recruit, train and inspire fifty schools across Greater Manchester (five per borough) to launch their own online radio station working with Key 103, Aim Higher Mentors and Universities.

With Droylsden Academy being picked as one of the five schools in Tameside to take part in the project, students in Year 9 and 10 jumped at the chance to launch the Academy's very own online radio station.

How it all began

Students that excelled in a day's introduction to radio and media via Key 103's Media Bus team were selected for two days training at Key 103's Castlefield headquarters in central Manchester. Here the students learnt more in depth about the different sections that make up a successful radio station with appealing shows for their listeners.

Students were split into four groups according to their individual strengths; news reporters, presenters, creativity and marketing team. Here the students were trained and shown the ropes of what their individual roles entail. News team researched breaking stories that were not only imperative but stories that would appeal to the listeners. Presenters learnt the art of interviewing whilst the creative and marketing teams chose a station name, slogan and designed a logo in addition to documenting all the marketing and information and creating advertisements.

The students eventually decided on the station name, 'Random Radio' and gave the station the slogan, 'Your music, Your way'! The first show was recorded at Key 103 headquarters and was aired online and around the Academy on Monday 31stOctober 2011.
