Did You Know?

  • 66% of employers believe that work related learning and training will play a vital role in creating future employment opportunities
  • 60% of employers believe that people with vocational qualifications have the necessary skills and experience to work for them from day one?
  • 90% of employers view vocationally trained staff as vital to the success of their business
  • 70% of employers say that vocationally qualified employees make their business more competitive

There has never been a more important time for young people to consider their future education and training pathways to maximize their chances of getting a job. Apprenticeships are a valuable way of gaining recognised qualifications while you work and developing the invaluable skills employers are seeking.

Apprenticeships are a way of earning a salary whilst you learn on the job. There are over 190 different types of Apprentices available to choose from, many in Tameside itself, and you can start to learn at any time from age 16 or older. And Apprenticeships are for young people of all abilities as long as you have the right entry requirements.

As an Apprentice you will receive specific training, either in work or on day release from your employer, and learn job specific skills along with qualifications. The length of time to complete an Apprenticeship varies according to your ability, the type of Apprenticeship, and your employer requirements but you can be sure you are working towards a highly valued, nationally recognised award.

Increasingly, employers all over Tameside recognise the value of taking Apprentices so they can train you with skills they need to grow their businesses and industries. For many young people, the Apprentice route becomes a gateway to further vocational training either by moving on to an Advanced Apprenticeship or on to a Foundation of Higher Degree. In some areas such as finance and business, apprenticeships lead to full professional qualifications.

As an Apprentice with the right qualifications and skills you are also likely to earn more: over the course of their careers, those with an Apprenticeship are likely to earn, on average, more than £10,000 more than those without. And many of today’s leaders in business, industry and commerce started out as Apprentices.
