The Aims of Our Curriculum

These statements summarise what our curriculum aims to do and must be the guiding principles and driving force of all curriculum planning undertaken at Droylsden Academy.

Our curriculum aims to:

1. Provide Inclusive and Ambitious Challenge for All We will ensure that every pupil is supported and challenged to learn, thrive and succeed, regardless of background, starting point or need.

a) Design an inclusive curriculum that addresses barriers to learning, engagement and wellbeing, ensuring equality of access and high expectations for all pupils;
b) Adapt teaching responsively through strong formative assessment, securing progress and ensuring our students keep up rather than catch up;
c) Regularly review and refine the curriculum through a cycle of evidence-informed evaluation to ensure it remains ambitious, relevant and effective.

2. Build Knowledge, Skills and Understanding. We will ensure pupils acquire secure, deep and meaningful learning that prepares them for future study, employment and life.

a) Teach pupils the essential, rich and powerful knowledge, understanding and disciplinary skills they need to succeed academically and flourish personally.
b) Sequence and structure learning coherently so that pupils build cumulatively on prior knowledge, make connections across topics and subjects, and retain and apply what they have learned over time.

3. Develop Literacy and Numeracy Across the Curriculum We will prioritise literacy and numeracy as the foundations of learning and future success.

a) Ensure all pupils develop confident and fluent proficiency in reading, writing, speaking and listening, and numeracy.
b) Embed literacy and numeracy consistently across all subjects so pupils can access the full curriculum and communicate their learning effectively.

4. Establish the Value of Each Subject to the Individual, the World of Work and Society We will ensure pupils understand the purpose and relevance of what they learn and how it connects to their future.

a) Understand the intrinsic value of each subject and what makes each distinctive in terms of knowledge, methods and ways of thinking.
b) Equip pupils with the knowledge, experiences and guidance needed to make informed, ambitious choices about further education, training and employment.
c) Develop pupils’ character, values and moral purpose, fostering their capacity to learn, serve, lead and participate positively in school, the community and global society.
d) Provide opportunities for pupils to develop existing talents and discover new ones, supporting personal growth and aspiration.
